For over a decade the world has witnessed the stunning pace of development of the Chinese economy – with amazement and admiration but also frequently with concern. The fast development of the “Middle State’s ” economy is inescapably being followed by the growth of its international significance – both in political and in military terms. Year by year – to some extent, against its ages-long tradition – China is becoming increasingly active and visible in the world.
For the moment China does not aspire to play the role of a world’s superpower or a military hegemon which would dominate the international relations following the pattern of the USA. Yet, will this also be true in the future? Will there not be political processes occurring in China 10 or 20 years from now which will change the current Chinese view of the international realities and which will boost the Beijing’s more aggressive posture?
